And you'll find that Oktoberfest isn't just held in Germany. Other cities around the world also hold Oktoberfest based on the Munich model.

A beer festival, each festival begins with a keg of beer drunk by the mayor of Munich declaring, "O'zapft is!" – Bavarian for "hear!" Special Oktoberfest beers are prepared for the occasion, which is slightly darker and stronger in taste and alcohol, and are served in a one-liter tank called the Mass.

Traditionally, the first service is celebrated by the Prime Minister of Bavaria. Only a local Munich brewery has the right to serve this beer in a beer tent – a beer tent large enough to accommodate thousands of people.

The first Oktoberfest was held in 1810 in honor of the marriage of the heir to the Bavarian throne, Ludwig, to Princess Theresa of Saxony-Hildburghausen.

In the following years, the celebrations were repeated and then the festival was extended and moved to September. Stirring up the celebrations, allowed for better weather conditions.

As September nights are warmer, visitors have the opportunity to enjoy the gardens outside their tents and spend more time strolling without getting cold.
