Many sports injuries occur because people push at speeds their bodies are not accustomed to. Some of these injuries arise from the mistaken belief that reaching higher intensities requires increasing speed. While this is true when training on a flat surface, as in the case of acceleration from sprinting too fast, it is not the same when comparing intensity levels on a flat and inclined surface. Walking 100 meters uphill on a 30° incline is a more intense exercise than walking at the same pace on level ground, because gravity always opposes movement.

By walking uphill, you can increase the intensity of your workout without increasing your speed. This means better form without significantly increasing the risk of injury.

When starting a mountain climbing program, the best thing to do is try to find a hill that is about 50 meters long with a slope of about 20°. It is easy to assess and does not require careful measurement. Start doing one to five repetitions of this hill once a week at a pace that you feel comfortable with.

He also discussed exactly why it is false to believe a flatter foot might be a “weaker” foot. Luke also explains exactly why he's personally NOT a fan of the ‘short foot exercise’ and simply the reason building up the intrinsic musculature will never make the medial longitudinal arch ‘higher’ which can be a widely believed myth.

Dr Luke Kelly PhD has more than fifteen years of clinical experience assisting people with pain because of bone and joint injury as well as chronic medical ailments. He has carried out a Doctor of Philosophy in biomechanics and is also actively involved in research which attempts to enhance our understanding and treatments for frequent foot disorders, including plantar heel pain, foot tendon problems, arthritis in the feet along with children’s sports disorders. He is right now a Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Sensorimotor Performance at the School of Human Movement & Nutrition Sciences at the University of Queensland in Australia. Luke’s present scientific studies are analyzing how the mind and spinal cord brings together sensation feedback to adapt the mechanical purpose of the feet during running and walking.
